All these paintings were made at once in the studio over a long period of time. It was an interesting and unusual thing for me to slow down my process so much and spend lots of time in the drawing phase as well as the painting.

The first two paintings above were inspired by my trips to Kentucky last summer. I spent time at a Shaker village near Louisville called Pleasant Hill that I'd visited many years before, and made many photographs and sketches of the beautiful landscape and simple buildings there. 

As for the interiors, I made and documented the drawing first on panel (interior drawing) before I put paint on it. I liked the drawing so much I started a larger painting (41 x 29.5, on the same paper I use for my large graphite oil drawings), with the drawing on that picture in Ultramarine Blue. I then worked on the two at once. 

The sunset picture is the view out my studio window with the train going by, and the sky study is Lake Michigan from the Michigan side.
